Saloni Sethia always wanted to work in a burgeoning company that had the potential for capturing a large market share. That’s how she found herself thinking about joining Morang Auto Works (MAW) Music Pvt Ltd, the official distributor of Yamaha music products in Nepal. Today,Sethia is the executive director of MAW Music Pvt Ltd. In this Biz Wiz interview, VMAG’s Sujan Lal Manandhar talks to Saloni Sethia about MAW’s newly opened store in Naxal,Yamaha Music Nepal’s marketing and branding strategy and the company’s reputed after sales service.
How did Yamaha Music start in Nepal? Yamaha, the company, started over a hundred years ago as a reed organ and piano manufacturer. It was only after World WarII that the company started making motorbikes. People in other countries recognise Yamaha as primarily a music company, but it was the opposite in Nepal. Here, Yamaha was perceived to be a company that made only bikes because MAW had been dealing in Yamaha bikes for a long time. To remove this misconception, MAW opened a Yamaha music showroom in 2007 in Kantipath. We started with keyboards, guitars and home theatre systems. Over time, we introduced a wider range of products. We now have wind instruments like flutes and saxophones. We also have the professional audio segment, where we see a promising future. We have products from mixers for people who record at home to complete sound systems.
